As Member States of the European Union discuss the Affordable Energy Action Plan and the European Commission works on updating the Ecodesign rules for domestic wood heating appliances, the French Renewable Energy Association (SER) highlights the essential role of this energy in the energy transition of Europe and France.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Domestic wood heating is an essential, popular and cost-effective renewable energy source across all regions.<\/strong> Today, around 50 million European households, including 8 million in France, use domestic wood energy for heating. In France, it is the leading source of renewable heat and accounts for 25% of the heat consumed in the residential sector.<\/p>\n\n

The domestic wood heating sector, with companies established across France, including 150 factories, contributes to local economic vitality and generates around 35,000 direct, non-relocatable jobs.<\/p>\n\n

Domestic wood heating is modern, efficient and environmentally friendly.<\/strong> Over the past two decades, the performance of domestic wood heating appliances (both stoves and boilers) has improved dramatically thanks to manufacturers\u2019 innovations, the development of the Flamme Verte label, and changes in French and European regulations. The same applies to fuels. By using a latest-generation appliance and high-quality fuel (moisture content < 23%), it is possible to consume less biomass (\u221230%).<\/p>\n\n

Replacing older appliances is part of this approach to improving performance and reducing biomass consumption. Over the past ten years, biomass consumption for domestic wood heating has decreased by 18%. At the same time, the number of appliances has increased by 11%. By maintaining this approach, it will be possible, by 2035, to supply more homes with renewable heat from domestic wood energy (+31%) while continuing to consume less biomass (\u221218%).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Moreover, the use of wood energy by French households also contributes to the resilience of the electricity system during winter peak demand, by easing pressure on the grid through the production of energy equivalent to that of ten nuclear reactors. By expanding the stock of appliances, alongside the electrification of uses, France and Europe ensure long-term energy independence and decarbonisation.<\/p>\n\n

Finally, innovation in products\u2014both appliances and fuels\u2014and the widespread maintenance of equipment contribute to improving air quality. Several recent analyses have shown that the share of concentrations attributable to domestic wood heating is below 22%.<\/p>\n\n

Domestic wood heating is not going to be banned in Europe.<\/strong> It is, in fact, considered essential to the European energy mix. Ongoing discussions only foresee changes to the regulations governing wood heating appliances from 2027 onwards. The aim is to ensure consumers have access to appliances that maximise energy efficiency and minimise environmental impact. This is part of a dynamic process of continuous product improvement, to which the SER is fully committed.<\/p>\n\n

According to Jules NYSSEN, President of the SER: \u201cDomestic wood heating will remain essential to our country\u2019s decarbonisation policy. I hear here and there that this heating solution could be banned from 2027. This is false. The SER is working with European and French authorities to define the criteria that will be adopted in future Ecodesign regulations for products. These regulations will not entail any restrictions for consumers and will apply only to equipment manufacturers. Work is ongoing, and industry players will be able to adapt and continue to offer ever more efficient equipment, as they have done for decades.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n
