Can I have a stove or a fireplace installed in a flat?

Stoves and fireplaces aren’t just for detached houses. Do you live in a flat and want to install a supplementary heating system? Or would you like to be able to use your stove or fireplace for a cosy fire on winter evenings? Here are our tips for enjoying the warmth of a fire in a flat.

Installing a wood-burning stove in a flat

It is entirely possible to install a wood-burning stove or a fireplace in a flat. However, storing logs can be quite tricky. You need a space that is large enough and, above all, dry to store the logs. This can be difficult to achieve in a flat.

Installing a wood-pellet stove in a flat

It is also possible to have a pellet stove in a flat. Storing pellets is easier than storing logs. This is because pellets come in bags, usually weighing 15kg. This makes it easier to store them inside the flat.

Installing a gas stove in a flat

The simplest solution if you live in a flat and are connected directly to the mains gas supply is to install a gas stove or fireplace. This means you don’t have to store any fuel in your flat.

Smoke extraction systems

Whether your stove or fireplace burns wood, pellets or even gas, these heating appliances always produce combustion fumes that must be vented outside.

If you live in an older flat, your building may already be fitted with a flue. Before installing your stove or fireplace, you must check with one of our professionals to ensure it complies with regulations.

If you live in a modern flat, your building is unlikely to have an existing flue. In that case, you have two options:

  • Create a new pipe.
  • Install a ‘vented’ flue outlet specifically designed for exhaust venting via the façade rather than via the roof.

Authorisations and regulations

The installation of a stove or fireplace in a building is subject to strict regulations. Indeed, for reasons of safety, noise pollution, airtightness and the building’s appearance, the installation must be carried out by qualified professionals.

Furthermore, the installation of a stove or fireplace must be approved by the owners’ association.

Finally, if you are a tenant, you should first contact your landlord, who will then take the necessary steps.
